Rachael Van Dyke, art educator

Educational Vision

Growing up my father believed in my artistic abilities. He gave me opportunities to create design work for co-workers and friends. He made those connections for me, connections that at age 14 I couldn’t have discovered on my own. I want to instill in my own students the same confidence I have in them to achieve great work while enjoying learning.

I have also worked as an adjunct professor with the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI. Within just a few visits to area public schools I found it evident that are art teachers still using templates and patterns with very closed-ended projects. I realized very quickly how different my vision and pedagogy was from art educators. I also realized how valuable my role is now as a professor teaching our next generation of art educators.

For 13 years I taught in the areas of K-12th grade art and design. As an art educator for jr. high and high school art and design at Ann Arbor STEAM, Brighton Public Schools, and NorthPointe Christian Schools I committed to making positive intersections for my students. Intersections of real-world experience and real-world knowledge. Intersections between real world professionals in the fine and applied arts and student career choices. I desire to create a dynamic classroom of learning through  actual client work, studio visits, guest critiques, peer-led critiques, artist-in-residences, senior exhibitions and guest artist demonstrations. As often as possible I strive to take a project to the truest level of real-world experience for my students.

By working as a professional artist I am current with art trends and news and able to make connections for classroom real-world projects. I remain enthusiastic about art making and create a healthy example of a working artist for my students.
